So, whether you're looking to buy an affordable gaming laptop or a high-end gaming machine, you'll find a laptop that meets your needs and budget in this guide.

Processor

League of Legends logo

League of Legends is a game that doesn't require a lot of processing power. You can play it on a laptop with an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3. However, if you're going for a frame-pumping laptop, you'll need a fast CPU. Period.

Requirements

League of Legends is not the most demanding game out there, but it does have moments where it can be CPU-limited. In simpler terms, your FPS will depend on your GPU and CPU. That can be contrasted with games such as Cyberpunk 2077 which are almost entirely GPU-bound.

I recommend an Intel Core i5/AMD Ryzen 5 for stable FPS on high graphics settings. That said, if you're aiming for the highest framerate possible (180+ on maxed-out FHD), you'll need a speedy Core i7/Ryzen 7 or Core i9/Ryzen 9 processor.

Recommendations

The thing is, there are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to processors. So what do I recommend? Well, for starters, Intel Core i3-1005G1 or AMD Ryzen 3 3250U are excellent budget options. If you're looking for a more substantial upgrade – my recommendations would be either Intel Core i5-1135G7, AMD Ryzen 5 4600H. If you want the very best – any Core i9 or Ryzen 9 will do great. Right now, Ryzen 9 5900HS take the cake of gaming performance.

TL;DR
  • League of Legends can be played on a laptop with an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, but for high FPS, you'll need at least a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor

Graphics card

League of Legends is a very popular game with a very low hardware requirement. In fact, it's very possible to play League of Legends on integrated graphics alone. It's often the case that the CPU and not the GPU limits the framerate in League of Legends. But just because you CAN run LoL on an integrated chip, doesn't mean you should.

Minimum graphics (under $500)

The bare minimum graphics card for playing League of Legends is integrated graphics. Integrated graphics are also what come with low-end processors and cost under $500. You might be surprised to hear that these types of GPUs can handle the game on ultra settings and at 60 FPS.

However, there are drawbacks to integrated graphics. For one, they're not very future-proof. For another, they're usually limited to 60 FPS on ultra settings. That's a tad low for newer games that are often more demanding than League of Legends. So, we'll need to find a better solution for playing League of Legends on higher framerates and with better visual settings.

Recommended graphics ($500 – $1000)

Entry-level cards from AMD and Nvidia offer the best bang for your buck in this price range. If you don't want to spend over $1000 on a laptop for playing League of Legends, these cards are your best bet. And you won't be disappointed with the performance.

For example, GTX 1650 offers 150 FPS on ultra settings in League of Legends and even manages to beat the higher-end GTX 1660 Ti on that metric. Meanwhile, AMD Radeon RX 5600M offers 90 FPS on ultra settings, which is still above the 60 FPS limit imposed by integrated graphics. And while I don't recommend these cards for newer games due to their lack of power, they're good enough for League of Legends as long as you don't have ambitions beyond 60 FPS.

Best graphics ($1000 and up)

The last category – best video cards – is for those that want their League of Legends experience maxed out at all times. To this end, RTX 3060 is your best bet. With its power-packed performance, you can expect 180 FPS on ultra settings in League of Legends without any hassle whatsoever.

If you have the budget for it, then RTX 2070 or RTX 2080 are also an option with their respective performance indicators – 140 FPS and 165 FPS respectively on ultra settings in League of Legends. However, I don't recommend these cards if you plan to play newer games as well because their power will be better spent elsewhere (such as 4K gaming).

TL;DR
  • even if you have integrated graphics, you can still play League of Legends on high settings
  • entry-level cards from AMD and Nvidia offer the best bang for your buck
  • if you want to play League of Legends on higher framerates and with best visual settings, then buy RTX 3060 or better

Memory

RAM sticks

Most people are already aware of the importance of a good processor and graphics card, but there are a few more components that you should consider before you decide on your laptop. One of these is the RAM. Though it is one of the less glamorous parts of a computer, it is still very important for performance.

Minimum (8 GB)

If you're looking for a budget laptop, you might be able to get away with 8GB RAM. But don't let that fool you – 8GB will be enough for League of Legends but it might limit you in the future.

Recommended (16 GB)

If you're not on a tight budget, I recommend 16GB. 16GB will be enough for most laptop gamers and even enough for some professional work.

Best (32 GB)

If you want to future-proof your laptop – get 32GB because 32 is the new 16. Currently I have a 16GB laptop and it has been doing great for years. But now, RAM is one of the first areas that I exhaust without even trying. If you want a laptop to serve you for years to come – 32GB is a definite choice.

TL;DR
  • 8GB RAM is enough for League of Legends, but not for the future. Get 16GB if you can afford it. If you want to future-proof your laptop – get 32GB.

Storage

Is HDD an option?

floppy disks

HDDs are slow and take up a lot of space (somewhat ironic for something that should provide space). But they're still an option for the cash-strapped gamer who's looking for a $800-$1,200 laptop and want to store their essential files (OS, LoL, documents) in SSD while having "an archive 1 TB HDD" for everything else without breaking the bank. HDD drives also could be updated to a SATA SSD along the road.

Upgrading

Storage is an easy upgrade for most laptops – just pop out a few screws and insert a new drive in its place. Some manufacturers might void your warranty if you were to upgrade, so it's best to buy a laptop that you'll be satisfied with for at least a year or two.

Recommendations

Here are our recommendations:

  • 256 GB SSD is enough if you're only using your laptop for daily tasks and LoL is one of the few games you've got installed
  • 512 GB SSD is best for those that want an excellent experience but can't spend more than $1000
  • 1 TB and up is the ideal case – more space for games (which are getting extermely sizeable these days), studies and professional applications
TL;DR
  • it's best to buy a laptop that you'll be satisfied with for at least a year or two, so buy one with plenty of space

Display

competitive gamers

First and foremost, League of Legends is a competitive game – so your focus should be on framerate and input latency. Second, it's not particularly visual-centric – so you can save money by not prioritizing the best laptop display for LoL.

Resolution

Most people won't need to go beyond Full HD. But if you want to be prepared for the future – it's a good time to jump on the 4K bandwagon. For laptops over $2000, I would recommend going with QHD or 4K. For everyone else – FHD is just fine.

Refresh rate

You can get by with 60Hz, but a high refresh rate display is always better for a competitive player. Once I got used to it – there's no way of going back. If you're just sticking with Full HD under $2,000- I would recommend going with a 120Hz+ display. If you're going for a QHD or 4K laptop – you're almost guaranteed to get a 60Hz panel, unless you'd spend an inordinate amount of money. Then, a QHD + 144Hz is a possible and welcome combination.

Adaptive sync

Adaptive sync is optional because LoL is played at very high framerates and when you're hitting 100 FPS or more – screen tearing is unnoticeable, input latency becomes hardware-bound and not dependant on frame timing synch.

TL;DR
  • your focus should be on framerate and input latency
  • most people won't need to go beyond Full HD, but if you want to be prepared for the future – it's a good time to jump on the 4K bandwagon
  • going with 144Hz (or more) is always better for a competitive player
